2011 Sand Hills Discovery Experience

The topic for 2011 is "Sand Hills Lakes, Rivers & Creeks ".   The conference is July 14, with optional tours on July 13 and 15.

Breakout sessions, exhibitors, vendors, continental breakfast and a catered lunch are included in the full day registration fee.  Informative tours are available on Wednesday and Friday to those registered for the Thursday conference.

1. Fossil Dig
8:15 am –12:00 noon

2. Merrit Dam and the Irrigation Project

3. Water Experiences
2:00-4:00 pm
No Fee

 

 

 

 

 

 

This tour will visit a 6.6 million year old fossil dig. Shane Tucker and staff will assist participants to work the dig. Tour is limited to 16 participants. Repeats Friday.

 

 

Rod Imm, manager of the Ainsworth Irrigation Project, will escort this tour to Merritt Dam and will discuss the history of the irrigation project.  Tour is limited to 15 participants.  Sack lunch will be provided.

 

 

 

 

Rachael Herpel, from the Water Center at UNL’s School of Natural Resources, will explore how individuals understand and relate to water and what this means as people work together - or don't work together - to address water issues.   Will be held at the Ainsworth Conference Center meeting room.

Dennis Bauer, UNL Extension Educator, will be demonstrating the new flavorful and tender cuts of meat that come out of the chuck roll during this presentation.  Participants will also have the opportunity to taste test these cuts.  Following the demonstration a grilled steak supper with all the trimmings will be served. Tour is limited to 50 participants.

5. Plum Creek Tour  9:00 am –12:00 noon  Fee $10.00

Visit a scenic overlook of Plum Creek as featured in the May/June 2011 issue of Nebraska Life.  Learn about the geology and history of the area.  $5.00 reduction on fees if you drive your own car.

 

6. Lake Wobig
7:45 am – 3:00 pm
Fee $20.00

Jim Swinehart will escort this tour to the ancient lakebed.  Sack lunch will be provided.  $5.00 reduction in fees if you drive your own car.  Tour is limited to 16 participants.

 

 

7. Sand Hills Lake Tour
8:45 am – 12:00 noon
Fee $12.00

Take an escorted scenic drive through the Sand Hills to view Sand Hills lakes and the spring-fed Calamus River Valley.  Stops will include information on the flora and fauna at each site. $5.00 reduction in fees if you drive your own car.  Tour is limited to 15 participants.

 

 

 

General Information: These tours are held in conjunction with the Sand Hills Discovery Experience. All tours will leave from the north entrance of the Ainsworth Conference Center, east Highway 20 and Ash Street.  Returning times are approximate. Plan to bring necessary out-of-doors items, such as sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, hats, comfortable, sturdy shoes and a water bottle. Tours are limited to registered conference attendees. Tours are limited in size and will be filled on first come, first serve basis. Transportation provided except where noted.
